Upcycle Your Tea Tin for Halloween: Easy DIY Spooky-Cute Storage

🎃Looking for a creative way to repurpose those charming metal tea tins? This Halloween-inspired upcycling project turns a simple tin into a festive storage solution perfect for candy, trinkets, or seasonal decorations. With just a few supplies and a bit of imagination, you’ll create a one-of-a-kind container that’s both practical and frightfully cute!

Video tutorial

Supplies You’ll Need:
  • One metal tea tin with a lid
  • Acrylic paints: black, white, dark green, bronze
  • Sanding block (optional, for prepping the surface)
  • Paintbrushes: small detail brush and large sponge brush
  • Wooden dowel cap
  • Faux leaves and branches
  • Hot glue gun
  • Flower embellishments (buttons, fabric flowers, etc.)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

 Prep & Paint the Tin

If you want your paint to stick more smoothly, start by lightly sanding the surface of your metal tin with a sanding block. Wipe away any dust before painting. Mix black and dark green acrylic paint and apply it to the tin using a large sponge brush. Let each coat dry completely—using a heating tool can help speed up the process. You may need two or more coats for full coverage.

Decorate the Lid

Set the tin aside and grab the lid. Paint only the center of the lid, leaving the sides untouched for contrast. Allow it to dry completely.

Create a Lid Handle

Apply dark green acrylic paint to part of the wooden dowel cap using a small brush. Once dry, use hot glue to attach the cap to the center of the lid. Finish painting the remaining part of the cap after it’s attached.

Add Bronze Accents

Dip your finger into bronze acrylic paint and gently streak it across the tin to create a rustic, aged effect. This technique adds depth and a touch of shimmer.

 Paint Your Ghosts

Using a small brush and white acrylic paint, hand-paint ghost shapes onto the tin. Once dry, add black eyes to each ghost for personality. Feel free to get creative with your designs—such as pumpkins, bats, or spooky lettering!

Embellish with Flowers

Add flower embellishments to each ghost; button flowers on one side of their heads give them a whimsical charm. You can also glue fabric flowers around the tin for added texture and flair.

7. Finish with Faux Leaves

Cut faux leaves and branches to size and hot glue them behind the dowel cap on the lid. This adds a natural, autumnal touch that ties the whole look together.

 Final Touches

Once everything is dry and secure, your Halloween tin is ready to use! It’s perfect for storing candy, small decorations, or even crafting supplies. Plus, it makes a great conversation piece or gift container.

This project is a fantastic way to breathe new life into old containers while celebrating the spooky season. Whether you're decorating your home or prepping for trick-or-treaters, this upcycled tin adds a handmade touch that’s both festive and functional.

How I Refreshed an Old Garden Statue with Paint (Easy Patio DIY)

This charming toad perched on his toadstool has been a beloved part of our patio for years, enduring the passage of time while gradually succumbing to the effects of sun and weather. With each season, he has faded a little more, losing some of his vibrant colors and details. Rather than allowing him to blend into the background and become just another forgotten decoration, I decided it was time to breathe new life into him.  I shared the whole process in a quick YouTube Shorts video called “Watch Me Refresh This Old Garden Statue.” It’s a simple before‑and‑after, but such a satisfying one.  Materials I Used Garden statue (mine is a toad on a toadstool) Sandpaper Acrylic paints Small detail brushes Mod Podge (for sealing and protection) Sanding and Painting I began by gently sanding the statue to smooth out the chipped and faded paint. It only takes a few minutes, but it makes such a difference. Once the surface felt ready, I brought out my acrylic paints and started...
